"The Fortress" as it was called, because of the extensive reinforced concrete defences, was home to Combined Operations during the Battle for the Atlantic in World War II. It was responsible for the delivery of supplies and equipment to Britain by sea at a time when Nazi Germany was sinking supply ships with their U-boats. Visitors can see the restored map room, control room and communications infrastructure used at the time.
